Lahore: Army personnel and Rangers will be deployed in Lahore from Wednesday to strengthen the security of international cricket teams before the triangular cricket series starting from February 8 in Pakistan. The party of former Prime Minister Imran Khan, who is jailed, planned to take out a protest march on this day. A ministry spokesperson said, “The Ministry of Home Affairs has allowed the deployment of Pakistani Army and Rangers for the protection of New Zealand and South Africa cricket team for the triangular cricket series in Lahore between February 5 and February 10.”
PTI has announced protest
Imran Khan (72) has been lodged in Rawalpindi’s Adiala Jail since 2023 in many cases and has been seen confrontation between the current government and Khan’s party since the general elections in February 2024. Khan’s party Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) has already announced that it will celebrate February 8 as ‘Black Day’ and will take out a protest rally on the historic Minar-e-Pakistan in Lahore on this day. On February 8 last year, general elections were held in Pakistan and PTI has been alleging that the mandate received by his party in the election has been disturbed.
Punjab Police personnel posted
Apart from the army and Rangers, police personnel of Punjab province of Pakistan will also be deployed to protect both teams. The spokesperson said, “No compromise will be made with the safety of foreign teams.” Under the triangular cricket series, the competition will be played from 8 to 10 February at Gaddafi Stadium and between 12 to 14 February in Karachi. Although the government has not yet allowed ‘PTI’ for the rally, ‘PTI’ said that whatever the protest will take out a march. (Language)
