London: A sensational case of attack on an Indian-origin nurse with scissors has come to light in the emergency medical unit of Royal Oldham Hospital in Greater Manchester, North-West Britain. This attack was carried out during the night shift. The nurse got seriously injured due to this. The nurse, who was attacked on Saturday night, was named at Manchester Magistrates Court as Achamma Cherian. 37-year-old Rumman Haq was arrested after this incident of attack. Greater Manchester Police said Haq was charged on Tuesday with attempted murder and possession of a bladed article, and was remanded in custody to appear at Manchester Crown Court next month.
“The victim is a 50-year-old woman and has suffered serious injuries (in the attack),” a police statement said. She has been admitted to hospital for treatment.” Detective Superintendent Matt Walker, of the Oldham district of Greater Manchester Police, said: “We pray for the speedy recovery of the nurse who is being treated in hospital. Our priority is to support him, his family and his colleagues during this difficult time. “We are working closely with NHS (National Health Service) colleagues to support anyone affected by this incident.”
Britain’s Health Minister expressed grief
Earlier, police had said that the nurse was attacked by members of the public resulting in serious injuries and they were not looking for anyone else in connection with the incident. “This is a serious incident which has left a woman in a serious condition,” Detective Sergeant Craig Rotters said shortly after the weekend incident. Britain’s Health Minister Wes Streeting expressed his grief on social media. They pray for the nurse’s speedy recovery after the horrific attack at the Royal Oldham Hospital. Heather Caudle, chief nursing officer at the Northern Care Alliance NHS Foundation Trust, which runs the hospital, said she was “extremely shocked and saddened” by the incident.
He added: “Our thoughts also go out to the colleagues and patients who were there when the incident occurred and for whom this was a tragic and horrifying incident. We will continue to assist Greater Manchester Police with their investigations,” he said, adding that services at the Royal Oldham Hospital were continuing.
