MEA Media Briefing: During the first media briefing of the year 2025, External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal responded on many issues. Regarding the death sentence given to Indian nurse Nimisha Priya in Yemen, the Foreign Ministry spokesperson said that we are closely monitoring the developments regarding Nimisha’s sentence. The government is providing all possible help in this matter. Earlier he had said that the government is in touch with the nurse’s family and relatives to help her and all legal options are being considered.
Jaiswal also spoke on Pakistan and terrorism
On the question regarding Pakistan and terrorism, Randhir Jaiswal clearly said, “I would like to remind you of what Hillary Clinton said, you cannot keep snakes in your backyard and expect them to bite your neighbors.” That said the relevant T word is terrorism and not tango!.
Answer given on Yarlung Tsangpo Hydroelectric Project
Regarding the Yarlung Tsangpo Hydropower Project, the Foreign Ministry spokesperson said that we have seen the information issued by Xinhua on December 25, 2024 regarding a hydropower project on the Yarlung Tsangpo River in the Tibet Autonomous Region of China. We have consistently expressed our views and concerns to the Chinese side at the expert level as well as through diplomatic channels on mega projects on rivers in their territory. The Chinese side has been urged to ensure that the interests of states downstream the Brahmaputra are not harmed by activities in the upstream areas. We will continue to monitor and take necessary measures to protect our interests.
What did Jaiswal say on the Foreign Minister’s visit to America?
Regarding Foreign Minister S Jaishankar’s visit to America, Randhir Jaiswal said that the purpose of this visit was to review the progress of India-US Comprehensive Global Strategic Partnership over the last few years, which has strengthened in many areas. The visit also provided an opportunity for both sides to exchange views on current regional and global developments. External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar met US Secretary of State Antony Blinken and NSA Jake Sullivan. The External Affairs Minister also chaired a conference of Consuls General of India in the US.
