BEIRUT: The Israeli military said Thursday its warplanes bombed southern Lebanon after detecting Hezbollah activity at a rocket storage facility. It is the first Israeli airstrike a day after the ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah took effect. There was no immediate information on casualties in the Israeli airstrike. Israel said Hezbollah violated the ceasefire agreement, but gave no details.
What will happen to the ceasefire agreement?
Lebanon’s official National News Agency said the attack wounded two people. The series of incidents have raised concerns about the US-France brokered deal, which includes an initial two-month ceasefire. Under this, Hezbollah fighters are to withdraw north of the Litani River and Israeli forces are to return to their side of the border. The buffer zone will be patrolled by Lebanese troops and UN peacekeepers.

Lebanon’s state news agency reported that Israeli gunfire targeted civilians in the Merkabah near the border, but gave no further details. An Associated Press reporter in northern Israel near the border heard Israeli drones passing overhead and shots being fired from the Lebanese side. Israeli officials have said that troops will be gradually withdrawn once the agreement is implemented.

Israel has warned people not to return to areas where troops are deployed. He has said that if Hezbollah violates the terms of the ceasefire, it has the right to attack it. A Lebanese military official said that as Israeli forces withdrew, Lebanese troops would gradually deploy to the south. The officer spoke on the condition of anonymity because he did not have the right to give information to the media. (AP)
