US President Donald Trump announced on Saturday that he would meet Ukraine President Volodimir Zelanski at the Oval Office in the White House on Monday. The meeting is taking place only a few days after Trump’s summit with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska, in which no concrete progress could be made on the Ukraine issue.
Trump wrote on his social media platform Truth Social, “President Zelancesi is coming to DC on Monday afternoon. If all goes well, we will also decide a meeting with President Putin.” He stressed that the best way to end the Russia-Ukraine war is not only a ceasefire, but a direct peace agreement.
Zelansky reported that he had a “long and pithy” conversation with Trump after the Alaska talks. He thanked Trump for the invitation and said that Washington’s meeting would be used for “all aspects related to ending war and killings”.
Zelansky said that Europe’s role in the peace process is very important and it is necessary to include European countries at every stage. He also added that there have been positive signs about participation in Ukraine’s security guarantee from the US.
Although he did not explain in detail, but earlier said that European partners had stopped the plan for deployment of foreign troops because there was no clarity of US support.
Zelansky informed that he also discussed Trump alone and then had a joint conversation with other European leaders. Overall, talks lasted more than one and a half hours.
In Alaska, Trump said – “There is no agreement until there is an agreement.” The statement came when Putin claimed that there was a “understanding” between the two leaders about Ukraine and warned Europe not to disrupt this early progress.
