Japan’s Agriculture Minister Taku Eto.
Tokyo: Japan’s Agriculture Minister Taku Eto had to resign from his post on Wednesday due to a controversial statement about rice. Eto recently said that he never needed to buy rice, because his supporters keep giving them rice in gifts. This statement came at a time when rice shortage in Japan and the huge increase in prices have disturbed the general public. There was a tremendous anger in the public about this statement of Eto, after which the pressure on them increased.
Eto said- I buy my own rice
Eto on Wednesday submitted his resignation to Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba, which was accepted. Eto told reporters after submitting his resignation in the Prime Minister’s Office, “When consumers are struggling with rising prices of rice, I made extremely unfair remarks. I felt that the government needed to deal with the challenges of rice prices, so it is not appropriate for me to remain as prominent. Eto apologized to the people and withdrew his statement. He also said that he himself buys rice and does not depend on the rice found in the gift.
Eto resigns for the government
According to media reports, Eto’s successor will be the popular former Environment Minister Shinjiro Koijumi. This incident may prove to be another setback for Ishiba’s minority government, which is already losing public support. Opposition parties had threatened that if Eto did not resign voluntarily till Wednesday afternoon, a no -confidence motion would be made against them. Explain that rice is an integral part of Japan’s culture, economy and food. It is not only the main food of the Japanese, but also has a special place in their traditions and religious rituals.
Rice is the basis of rural economy
In Japan, rice is considered a symbol of prosperity and fertility, and is also used to offer gods in Shinto religion. Rice plays an important role in Japanese food such as Sushi, Onigiri and Mochi. Rice has been cultivated in Japan for centuries and is the basis of rural economy. In such a situation, the lack of rice and inflation is a sensitive issue for the public. In the last few months, rising rice prices in Japan have broken the back of the public, and they have to look towards other options. (AP)
