Justin Trudeau Response To Donald Trump: Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has responded to the statement of newly elected US President Donald Trump in which he said that Canada can become the 51st state of America. Trudeau has called Trump’s statements a distraction tactic. “That’s not going to happen. Canadians are very proud to be Canadian. The easiest way to define us is that we are not American,” Trudeau said in an interview with CNN.
‘American people will have to bear the brunt’
America’s newly elected President Donald Trump has several times in recent times made an open offer to Canada to become the 51st state and threatened to impose heavy tariffs on it. In such a situation, Trudeau has now said that if such tariffs are implemented then the American people will have to bear the brunt of the increased prices. “Everything American customers buy from Canada, including oil, gas, electricity, steel, aluminum, lumber, concrete, will suddenly become much more expensive if they move forward with these tariffs,” Trudeau said.
Trudeau mentioned the 2018 trade dispute
Justin Trudeau also noted Canada’s use of counter tariffs during a 2018 trade dispute on American goods such as Heinz ketchup, playing cards, bourbon and Harley-Davidson motorcycles. “We don’t want to do that because it increases prices for Canadians and hurts our closest trading partner,” Trudeau said.
