Philippines Volcano Eruption: There has been a massive explosion in the Kanlaon Volcano in the Philippines. After the explosion, a cloud of ash spread thousands of meters into the sky. The administration has ordered the evacuation of nearby villages and relief work is underway. The Civil Defense Office of the Philippines said that due to the eruption of Kanlaon volcano, about 87,000 people have been rescued with immediate effect and taken to safe places.
There have been explosions before too
Kanlaon Volcano, located on the island of Negros, rises 2,400 meters (about 8,000 feet) above sea level. It is one of the 24 active volcanoes in the Philippines. This volcano has erupted many times in the past and it has always been a sign of danger for the villages located near it.
Kanlaon is an active volcano
The Philippines Institute of Volcanology and Seismology has raised the alert level. The institute has warned that the eruption has started which may further turn into bigger explosions. Kanlaon Volcano last erupted in June this year. The volcano spans the provinces of Negros Oriental and Negros Occidental on the island of Negros and is one of the most active volcanoes in the country.
Philippines is located in the ‘Ring of Fire’
Notably, the Philippines is located in the ‘Ring of Fire’ of the Pacific Ocean, which makes it vulnerable to earthquakes and volcanic activities. There are 24 active volcanoes in the country, of which Kanlaon is one. Volcanic eruptions and earthquake activities are often seen here which are a big threat to the local residents.
