Lawrence Wong again took command of Singapore amid tariff crisis

A few days before the general election in Singapore, Prime Minister Lawrence Wong said that his team’s goal in today’s changed world is clear, “To remove Singapore from the storm and ensure a bright future for its people.”

The ruling People’s Action Party (PAP) led by economic expert -turned -leader Lawrence Wong won the general election on Saturday. In this election, the tariff started by former US President Donald Trump.

Wong said that both America and China say that they do not want to push countries in one side, but in reality both are trying to pull them towards them. This competition is not only changing the world, but will also shape the global politics of the coming years.

He said in the third week of April, “We are going through a tangled global change. No one knows where these changes will be taken.”

Change is not new for 52 -year -old Wong. In May 2024, he was sworn in as Prime Minister of Singapore under a planned political change.

He was the Finance Minister of the country since 2021 and replaced 72 -year -old Lee Sean Loong, who was the Prime Minister for two decades. In April 2022, Wong was made the leader of the PAP’s fourth generation team (4G) and was promoted to the post of Deputy Prime Minister in June 2022.

Today he is also the General Secretary of PAP – the same party which laid the foundation for the economic progress of Singapore in the last five decades. Wong has studied graduation and postgraduate in Economics from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and the University of Michigan, N Arber. Apart from this, he has also received a master’s degree in Public Administration from Harvard Kennedy School.

According to the GIC website, Wong started his career as an economist and worked in several government ministries, including the post of head of the Energy Bazaar Authority (EMA). Wong joined the Ministry of Trade and Industry in 1997 and became a Member of Parliament for the first time in 2011. He then became the Minister of Culture and National Development, and then Finance Minister.

He has also previously been the Chairman of Monetary Authority, Singapore. In June 2022, he was appointed Deputy Prime Minister. During the Kovid-19 epidemic, Wong showed leadership skills as the co-chairman of the government’s multi-ministry response committee.

After taking oath as Prime Minister, The Straight Times reported that the “Forward Singapore” campaign launched in 2022 proceeded under the leadership of Wong, in which 4G leaders continued to interact with common citizens, so that a roadmap could be prepared for the future of the country.

Wong’s wife’s name is Lu Tje Loui. According to The Straight Times, Wong is a music lover and the guitar is his favorite instrument.
