The Bangladesh Awami League was established on 23 June 1949. It was established in Dhaka (then East Pakistan) under the name ‘East Pakistan Awami Muslim League’. The party later removed the word ‘Muslim’ and made it a secular party and named ‘Awami League’. The prominent leaders of the establishment of this party included Maulana Abdul Hameed Khan Bhashani, Shamsul Haq and Hussain Shaheed Suhravardi.

When did the party recognize

The party got a big identity when Sheikh Mujibur Rahman started leading it. He is called “Bangabandhu” (friend of Bengal). He played a historic role in the direction of freedom from Pakistan, leading in the 1971 Bangladesh liberation struggle.

Freedom struggle of 1971

The Awami League won the 1970 general elections by an overwhelming majority in the eastern part of Pakistan. However, the power of West Pakistan did not recognize it. In protest, the Awami League started the movement, which ended with the formation of Bangladesh.

After separating from Western Pakistan in 1971, the new country became Bangladesh. Sheikh Mujib became the first Prime Minister of Bangladesh. However, he was assassinated in a military coup in 1975. After this, the party remained out of power for many years.
