Former central banker Mark Karney was sworn in as the 24th Prime Minister of Canada on Friday, and will now try to pursue his country through the trade war, merger threats and expected federal elections brought by US President Donald Trump.
59 -year -old Carney will replace Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, who announced his resignation in January, but remained in power until the new leader’s election by the Liberal party. It is widely believed that Carney will give impetus to the general election in the coming days or weeks. The ruling Liberal Party was ready for the historic election defeat this year, until Trump declared an economic war and threatened to merge the entire country as the 51st state. Now the party and its new leaders can come to the top.
Carney has stated that if Trump “Canadian shows respect for sovereignty and a common approach to business, ready to adopt a more comprehensive approach, they are ready to meet them.” Trump has imposed a 25 percent tariff on Canada’s steel and aluminum and has been threatening to put wide tariffs on all Canadian products since April 2.
He has threatened economic pressure in threats of his merger and suggested that Seema is a fictional line. The US trade war and the making of Canada the 51st American state by Trump has enraged Canadian people who are opposing the US national anthem in the NHL and NBA sports. Some people are canceling their trips to the south of the border, and many people are avoiding buying American goods whenever possible.
The bounce in Canadian nationalism has strengthened the possibilities of Liberal Party in the parliamentary election to be held a few days or within weeks, and Liberal’s performance in public opinion surveys is getting better. Carney, who faced crisis as the head of the Bank of Canada since 2008, and then in 2013 when he became the first non -non -citizen to run the Bank of England – helped manage the worst effects of Brexit in Britain – now trying to run Canada through a business war brought by Trump.
Former Prime Minister Jean Cretian told reporters on Friday, “He will do very well. He is honored internationally.” But, he said: “There is no magical solution. It is not a normal situation. We have never seen someone who changes his mind every five minutes as the President of the United States. It only causes problems not only in Canada, but everywhere.”
