In a major update, it has just been revealed that an earthquake of magnitude 7.1 has been recorded. The magnitude was so high that tsunami warnings have been issued.
A strong earthquake measuring 7.1 on the Richter scale struck off the southern coast of Japan on Thursday. A tsunami warning has been issued following the quake, although no major damage has been reported so far.
According to the Japan Meteorological Agency, the epicenter of the earthquake was at a depth of 30 kilometers off the east coast of Japan’s Kyushu Island. The areas most affected by the earthquake were Nichinan city and surrounding areas in Miyazaki Prefecture.
After the earthquake, waves as high as 50 cm (1.6 feet) were seen on the southern coast of Kyushu and the neighboring island of Shikoku. The administration has appealed to people to stay away from the beach. Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshimasa Hayashi said that officials are assessing the damage caused by the earthquake.
Japanese media reported that the earthquake broke windows at Miyazaki airport, causing panic there. The administration is keeping an eye on the entire situation and people are being appealed to be cautious.
