Mizoram’s Zorm People’s Movement (ZPM) government is going to bring amendment bill on liquor and beer on Wednesday.
Amendment bill on alcohol and beer
Departmental Minister Lalanagilova Hamar will introduce the bill that proposes to allow the sale, distribution and construction of liquor and beer made from rice and fruit produced within the state. This will only be for license holders.
Also, this bill will also allow the sale of traditional Mizo liquor in the state. After presenting the budget of 2025-26 in the Assembly, the CM told reporters that his government would not allow the liquor shops to open, but would control the sale of liquor and beer in the state locally produced.
Consultation with churches
He said that churches have been consulted on this matter and they have given their consent to this decision. The government had informed in the Assembly in March 2024 that it would review the state’s liquor ban law, which prohibits the sale and consumption of liquor in the state.
There are demands to remove liquor ban and open liquor shops from many areas. The Chief Minister said that the government will not consider such appeals.
History of liquor ban
Let us know that in 2019, a ban on liquor was re -implemented in Mizoram. Even before this, there were liquor restrictions in the state. In 1984, liquor shops were allowed to be opened under the Mizoram Prohibition Act, 1973, but were closed in 1987.
The Mizoram Full Liquor Ban Act was implemented in 1995, which banned alcohol on 20 February 1997.
In January 2015, under a new law, liquor shops were allowed to be opened in the state. The MNF government took a step towards implementing the liquor ban again, changing this policy after coming to power as per its election promise.
