Phom Penh: A tragic accident took place in Cambodia’s capital Phom Penh on the occasion of China’s Lunar New Year. The accident happened when Sok Kong, one of the country’s richest people, was distributing gifts. Four people died and five others were injured on Thursday in a stampede that broke out while distributing gifts. Officials have given information about this. Food and cash were being distributed to people as gifts.
People gathered for gifts
Police spokesperson Sam Wichika said that $10 in cash and two kilograms of rice were being distributed as gifts to the needy. During this, hundreds of people gathered at the premises of industrialist Sok Kong in Phom Penh. Many people were crushed to death in the stampede that took place in the race to get gifts. He said several people in the crowd fell unconscious on the ground and were taken to hospital but two women and two men died. After the incident, the officials dispersed the crowd and stopped the distribution of gifts.
Rich people share gifts
Sok Kong has invested in a number of sectors including hotels, casinos and the oil industries. He is believed to have a close personal relationship with former Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen. Sok Kong and other wealthy people in the capital, Phom Penh, traditionally distribute gifts to the poor every year on the occasion of Lunar New Year. The Lunar New Year begins next week. (AP)
