Nehal Modi, brother of fugitive diamond businessman Nirav Modi, has been arrested in the United States on Friday based on the extradition request made by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and the Enforcement Directorate (ED), on Friday.
Arrest is a significant progress in India’s efforts to bring individuals involved in the Rs 13,000 crore Punjab National Bank (PNB) fraud case.
The United States Department of Justice has informed Indian officials that Nehal Modi, brother of fugitive economic criminal Nirav Modi, was arrested on July 4, 2025. Officials said, “The arrest has been done in pursuance of the Enforcement Directorate (ED) and the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to follow the extradition request.”
According to the complaint lodged by the US prosecution, extradition proceedings are being done in two cases: one case is of money refinement under Section 3 of the Money Laundering Act (PMLA), 2002, and the other case is of criminal conspiracy under Section 120-B and 201 of the Indian Penal Code.
Nehal Modi is wanted in India in the billions of dollars of Punjab National Bank (PNB) fraud case, which is one of the biggest banking scams in the history of the country.
