To ensure complete privacy during the entire process of choosing the new Pope, special signal jammers will also be used around the Systein Chapel. Citing the Italian news agency ANSA, CNN said that special signal jammer 133 cardinals would prevent any effort of digital communication or espionage during the Pope elections.

The tradition is centuries old

According to Italian broadcaster Rai, all the signals are expected to be closed at 3 pm on Wednesday, about 90 minutes before the cardinals go to the chapel to start voting. Earlier this week, Vatican confirmed that all 133 cardinals attending the conference have now reached Rome. The pope is always selected in a closed room called “Conclave”. In Latin it means “with the key”, shows how the doors are closed until the decision is made. This tradition is centuries old.

Contact will be cut off from outside world

According to a Vatican spokesperson, the cardinals will deposit their phones and electronic goods on Tuesday and will not withdraw them until the new Pope is selected. From Wednesday, they will live inside the Sistin Chapel without contacting the outside world. They will also have to take an oath by promising “complete and sustainable secrecy”.

Security measures have been done

CNN reported that signal restrictions would not be applicable to a large public place in front of St. Peter Square, Basilica. However, safety measures have been strengthened, in which systems have been installed to prevent checkpoints, metal detectors and drones.

Strict lockdown process

The Vatican City State Government said that there will be strict lockdown in the Conclave area. The same method was adopted in 2013 when signal blockers were installed for the election of Pope Francis. Meanwhile, employees managing the daily needs of the Vatican will also take an oath of silence. All these employees will stay in the Vatican overnight and will not contact their families.
