Sri Lankan Navy fired on Indian fishermen (symbolic photo)
New Delhi: Five Indian fishermen were injured in a shootout by the Sri Lankan Navy on Tuesday morning near the Delt Island. India has reacted strongly to this incident. In New Delhi, the Acting High Commissioner of Sri Lanka was summoned in the Ministry of External Affairs and a strong protest was lodged. In its response, India said that under any circumstances, the use of force is not ‘acceptable’.
Navy fired on fishermen
The ministry said, “The Sri Lankan Navy opened fire while capturing 13 Indian fishermen near the Delt Island. Two of the 13 fishermen aboard the fishing boat have suffered serious injuries and are currently undergoing treatment at Jaffna Teaching Hospital. ” It states that three other fishermen have suffered minor injuries and have been treated. Officials of the Indian Consulate in Jaffna met the injured fishermen at the hospital and know about their well being. Fishermen and their families are being provided all possible help.
‘Follow consent strictly’
The Ministry of External Affairs said, “The Acting High Commissioner of Sri Lanka, New Delhi, was called to the Ministry of External Affairs and a strong protest was lodged against the incident.” Colombo -based Indian High Commission has also raised this matter before the Sri Lankan Foreign Ministry. The Indian statement states, “The Government of India has always emphasized the need to deal with fishermen related to their livelihood concerns.” The Ministry of External Affairs said, “Use of force is not acceptable under any circumstances. In this regard, the current consent between the two governments should be strictly followed. ”
