China Military Exercises Near Taiwan
Beijing: China’s army is carrying out large-scale military activities around Taiwan. Even though the Chinese army is active in this area, it has kept the deployment of naval and coast guard ships quietly. China considers self-ruled Taiwan, with a population of 23 million people, as its territory and objects to other countries’ formal relations with Taiwan. Meanwhile, Taiwanese officials said that China is imposing a blockade by deploying ships.
Army itself takes decisions
China’s Defense Ministry has not yet publicly commented on this activity. In his statement, Wu Qian, the top spokesperson of the Chinese Defense Ministry, cited a famous quote from “The Art of War”, an ancient Chinese text on war strategy, that military strategy adapts to changing circumstances like flowing water. The spokesperson said the Army decides to conduct exercises based on its requirements and situation.
What did Taiwan officials say?
Qian also said that the country’s military is determined to oppose Taiwan’s independence and reunify it with China under any circumstances. Taiwanese officials described China’s activity as training, as there was no confirmation from China that it was conducting exercises. Officials said they are monitoring the training and view it as a threat.
tension has increased
It is noteworthy that Taiwan is a self-governing island and China claims it to be its territory. Tension over this issue has increased in recent years. China has increased its presence in the maritime and airspace around Taiwan. It is sending a large number of warplanes and navy ships for military exercises near Taiwan and its coast guard continues patrolling. (AP)
