In the final stages of World War II, on 6 and 9 August 1945, the US caused the most huge devastation of history by dropping a nuclear bomb on two cities of Japan, ‘Hiroshima and Nagasaki’. Hiroshima called “Little Boy” and Nagasaki called “Fat Man”, in which millions of people were killed and both cities were converted into ashes. But do you know that Nagasaki was not the target of America first? The second atomic bomb was actually to be demolished on another city in Japan but at the last moment the target of America changed and Nagasaki was replaced by that city.
This city was America’s first target
During World War II, the US planned to use atomic bombs with the intention of forcing Japan to surrender. After dropping the first bomb on Hiroshima, the second target was set and the target was Kokura city of Japan. Kokura was then an important industrial city in Japan, which had large-scale ammunition and weapon-making factories. The US strategy was to further weakened Japan’s military power by attacking Kokura. For this, on August 9, 1945, the B-29 bomber aircraft “box car” was sent to Kokura with “Fat Man” bomb.
How to change
On the morning of 9 August, when the B-29 aircraft reached above Kokura, the weather there was bad. There was dense clouds and smoke in the sky, due to which the target was not clearly visible to the pilot Major Charles Sweeny. According to the Rules of the US Army, the atomic bomb was to be demolished only on the basis of vision, so that an accurate target could be done. Even after several rounds, when the attack on Kokura was not possible, there was a lack of fuel in the aircraft. As such, Sweeni had to choose another option and that was Nagasaki.

74,000 people killed due to bomb fall
Nagasaki was an alternative target in the US list at that time. It was a port city and was also industrially important, but a lower priority target than Kokura. It was not possible to target Kokura due to the weather, and finally at 11:02 am, the “Fat Man” was dropped on Nagasaki. About 74,000 people were killed in this attack, and a large part of the city was destroyed.
Kyoto was also targeted, but survived
It would be surprising to know that the US initially included the city of Kyoto in Japan in the list of targets. Kyoto was the cultural capital of Japan at that time, where many universities, industries, and historical heritage. But US War Minister Henry Stimson removed Kyoto from the list. The reason was his personal attachment. Stimson celebrated a honeymoon in Kyoto with his wife and had many memories of him from the city. Due to his stubbornness, Nagasaki was included in the list instead of Kyoto. In this way, the memory of a honeymoon saved Kyoto from destruction, but Nagasaki had to pay the price.
Horrifying
The “Fat Man”, dropped on Nagasaki, was even more powerful than the “Little Boy” of Hiroshima. The bomb exploded about 500 meters above the ground, due to which a huge mushroom of fire rose in the sky. The explosion was so tremendous that 70% of the city’s industrial area was completely destroyed. However, the mountains around Nagasaki limited the scope of devastation to some extent, which led to the loss compared to Hiroshima. Nevertheless, this attack took away the lives of thousands of people and left a profound impact of radiation on the coming generations.

What do historians say?
Many historians believe that Japan was already on the verge of defeat at that time, and the use of atomic bombs was probably not necessary. Some argue that the US demonstrated its military power through these attacks and wanted to give a message to the Soviet Union. At the same time, some say that US President Harry Truman wanted to force Japan to surrender as soon as possible, so that the war could be ended. After these attacks, Japan surrendered on 15 August 1945, and the end of World War II came to an end.
