Protest against change in marriage age of girls in Iraq
Iraq Marriage Age For Girls: Child marriage has been effectively legalized in Iraq. Under this, after amendments in decades old laws, girls can now get married at the age of 9 years. After this change in Iraq, protests have also started to stop its ‘devastating effects’. The previous minimum age for marriage in the country was 18 years.
powers given to clerics
Following new amendments in Iraq, clerics have been given the right to decide on family matters including marriage, divorce and child care. “We have reached the end of women’s and children’s rights in Iraq,” said lawyer Mohammed Juma, one of the most prominent opponents of the law. Iraqi journalist Saja Hashim said, The fact that the fate of women is in the hands of clerics makes me afraid of everything that is going to happen in my life as a woman.
the law is terrible
According to The Sun report, women’s rights groups have described the passing of these laws as horrifying. Protests have also started in Iraq after the change in marriage age. Protesters say it undermines Iraq’s 1959 personal status law, which unified family law and established protections for women.
‘Violation of right to life’
Intisar al-Mayali, a human rights activist and member of the Iraqi Women’s League, said “It violates their right to life as children, and will disrupt the protection mechanisms for women such as divorce, custody and inheritance.” She also said the change would have a “devastating impact on the rights of women and girls to marry at an early age.”
Law takes away women’s rights
Yanar Mohammed, chair of the Organization for Women’s Freedom in Iraq (OWFI), said the change “terrifies Iraqi women and civil society with a law that takes away all the rights Iraqi women have enjoyed in modern times.”
