Nuclear Submarines: In view of China’s increasing activities in the Indian Ocean Region (IOR), India has taken steps towards strengthening submarine deterrence. The CCS of the Government of India, i.e. the Cabinet Committee on Security headed by the Prime Minister, has given permission to build two indigenous nuclear submarines. This will increase the strategic and offensive capability of the Indian Navy. With the construction of these submarines, the strength of the Navy will increase more in the Indian Ocean region and South China Sea. This also indicates that India has given priority to submarines instead of a third aircraft carrier warship.

China’s presence in the sea has increased

The submarines will be built at the Ship Building Center in Visakhapatnam. Submarines will be up to 95 percent indigenous. These submarines will be different from the Arihant class. These will be built under Project Advanced Technology Vessel. This step has been taken by India at a time when 7-8 Chinese naval warships and 3-4 paramilitary ships can be seen every month in the Indian Ocean Region and their number is likely to increase further in the future. At present, Chinese surveillance ship ‘Xiang Yang Hong 3’ has been spotted off the Chennai coast and ballistic missile tracker ‘Yuan Wang 7’ has been spotted off the Mauritius coast.

Indian Navy’s strength will increase

Due to China’s growing presence in the Indian Ocean region, national security concerns have chosen nuclear submarines to deter and monitor PLA activities, especially in the southern Indian Ocean. Right now two submarines will be built, after this four more can be built. Whereas, India has recently commissioned its second SSBN i.e. nuclear submarine INS Arighat. Within the next year, the Indian Navy is going to get many different types of warships and submarines. These warships include frigates, corvettes, destroyers, submarines and survey vessels. With their inclusion in the Navy, the level of security in the Indian Ocean Region will increase.

Why is there a need for nuclear submarine?

Nuclear powered strike submarine can remain underwater for a long time. China already has 6 Shang class nuclear submarines. Akula class nuclear submarine from Russia for India has been postponed till 2028. The Navy needs these submarines to increase surveillance in the Indian Ocean region. It is also important to understand that diesel-electric submarines have to surface at least once a day to charge the batteries. During this time, the diesel-electric submarine could have been attacked. Apart from this, diesel submarines are vulnerable to air attacks. Diesel submarines equipped with air-independent propulsion can remain underwater for long periods, but these submarines have to compromise on onboard weapons as well as speed.

India became the sixth nuclear triad country in the world

Arighat is capable of carrying out undersea missile attacks in the same way as Arihant had tested on 14 October 2022. Then K-15 SLBM was successfully tested from Arihant. With this, India became the sixth nuclear triad country in the world apart from America, Russia, Britain, France and China.
