External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar at the BIMSTEC conference.
Bangkok: Amid the counter duty announced by US President Donald Trump, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar said on Thursday that the world is moving towards the era of ‘self-help’ and every region will have to focus on itself. Jaishankar, while addressing the 20th ministerial conference of Bay Bay Multi-Regional Technical and Economic Cooperation Initiative (BIMSTEC), said that small supply chains and near neighbors have now become more important than before.
He said, “The reality is that the world is moving towards the era of self-help. Every field needs to focus on itself, whether it is food, fuel and fertilizer supply, vaccine or quick disaster response. “The Foreign Minister said,” We are seeing it happening in front of our eyes. The time has actually changed. Small supply chains and near neighbors have become far more important than earlier. ”Jaishankar is here to attend the BIMSTEC ministerial meeting. At the same time, Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived here on Thursday to attend the sixth BIMSTEC summit.
The world is going through a period of turmoil
The minister said that the BIMSTEC summit “is happening in very uncertain and unstable time while the global system is going through a round of upheaval.” He said, “This should encourage us to see BIMSTEC from a more ambitious perspective.” The new system, whose outline is now visible, is basically more regional and agenda-specific. “The minister said,” The era when some powers used to take the international system in their hands, are now left behind. How we see our possibilities depends largely on us. It is better for developing countries facing many challenges to work with each other instead of dealing with them alone. ‘
BIMSTEC’s emerging center told Northeast of India
Jaishankar underlined that the northeastern region of India is emerging as a contact center for BIMSTEC, especially with a network of roads, railways, waterways, grids and pipelines. He said, “The completion of the trilateral highway will connect the North East of India to the Pacific Ocean, which would actually be a transformative step.” Jaishankar also said that there are shared interests and shared concerns of the countries around the Bay of Bengal, which stems from history. He said, “Whether it is contact, trade, investment or services between BIMSTEC members, we are performing less than our real ability.” Jaishankar said that from India’s point of view, BIMSTEC from India represents three important initiatives – Act East Policy, Neberhood First approach and Maha -Sagar view.
