At least five people were injured in Pakistan’s Balochistan province on Sunday due to an earthquake of 5.3 magnitude. According to Tauqir Shah, an official of paramilitary force levy, the earthquake center was near Barkan city and it came at around 3.30 am local time.
Shah said, “We have received news of at least five people injured, including a couple, whose roof of the house fell into the Rara Sham area near Barkan.”
The United States Geological Survey reported the earthquake center about 60 km from the city of Barkan.
Shah said that the tremors of the earthquake were felt in many areas including Rara Sham, Kingary and Object near Barkan.
According to initial reports, about a dozen houses were damaged due to the earthquake, while many houses in the affected areas caused cracks. Some media reports stated that the intensity of the earthquake on the Richter scale measured 5.5.
In 2021, 20 people were killed and several injured in an earthquake in the Hanai city of the province, while in October 2005, more than 73,000 people were killed and about 35 million people were killed in a 7.6 magnitude earthquake in northern areas of Pakistan.
In June, about a dozen earthquake tremors were felt in Pakistan’s largest city Karachi, but no casualties or damage were reported.
According to experts, Pakistan has five seismic areas as it is located on three major tectonic plates – Arabian, Euro -ASian and Indian.
