Pakistan will increase defense spending by 18 percent: report

The Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N)-headed government shared a new budget structure of about Rs 17,500 billion with its leading colleague PPP, which has agreed to increase the defense expenditure by 18 percent.
Decision on increasing stress with India
The newspaper quoted sources as saying that due to recently increased tension with India, it has been agreed to increase the defense budget between PML-N and PPP. He said that in view of the current security threats, the PPP supported the proposal to increase the defense budget by 18 percent to more than Rs 2,500 billion. In the current financial year (2024-25), the government allocated Rs 2,122 billion for defense spending, which is 14.98 percent more than Rs 1,804 billion placed in the budget for the previous financial year (2023-24). The second largest component of the annual expenditure is the cost of the defense sector after the loan payment. In the current year, Rs 9,700 billion allocated for loan payment is the country’s largest expenditure.
