Peshawar: Pakistan has planned to get 3 million Afghans out of the country this year, as the deadline given voluntarily to leave the capital and surrounding areas voluntarily by March 31 has ended on Monday. This is the latest phase of nationwide action launched in October 2023, which aims to expel foreigners living illegally in Pakistan from the country, mostly of Afghanistan citizens.

What do data say

According to data from the International Migration Organization, around 845,000 Afghans have left Pakistan in the last 18 months. Pakistan says that 30 lakh Afghans are left. Of these, 1,344,584 has a registration certificate, while 807,402 have a civilian card of Afghanistan. Apart from this, there are 10 lakh Afghans which are illegally in the country, because they do not have any papers.

Why Pakistan decided

Terrorism

Pakistan says that the country is threatened by terrorist groups. People living illegally obstruct anti-terrorism operations, especially against Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP). After the Taliban control over Afghanistan in 2021, Pakistan has tightened border security.
