Islamabad: Authorities in Pakistan are making efforts to arrest jailed former Prime Minister Imran Khan’s wife Bushra Bibi for failing to appear in court in an alleged £190 million corruption case. According to ‘Express Tribune’, strictness is being taken after the decision given by the accountability court on November 22. Non-bailable warrants were issued against Bushra as she remained absent from eight consecutive hearings.

Judge Nasir Javed Rana has rejected his plea for exemption from appearing in court. Officials said that following the directive, the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) has asked its team from Rawalpindi to arrest Bushra Bibi. Bushra Bibi is believed to be living in Peshawar, the provincial capital of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province. Khan’s party Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf is in power in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

‘Express Tribune’ reported that a NAB team had gone to Peshawar with the police on November 23, but had to return empty handed. Officials said that when the team showed the arrest warrant at Bushra Bibi’s house, it was found that she was not present at home.

Both Imran Khan and Bushra Bibi are accused of misappropriating 50 billion Pakistani rupees (190 million pounds), which was returned to Pakistan by Britain’s National Crime Agency under a deal with a property businessman. The money was meant for the national treasury, but was used for the personal benefit of the businessman who had helped Bushra and Khan establish the university. Bibi, as trustee of the Al-Qadir Trust, is accused of benefiting from the deal. Bushra is also accused of acquiring 458 kanals of land for Al-Qadir University in Jhelum. (Language)
