Pakistan Hindu Female Officer Manisha Ropeta
Karachi: The first Hindu woman officer of the Sindh Police in Pakistan has expressed hope that her story will inspire more girls from her community and they will choose to join the profession. Manisha Ropeta, Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) from Jacobabad, cleared the Sindh Public Service Commission exam in 2021, a rare feat for a middle-class family like hers. There are two types of officers in the Pakistan Police. One class is the one that reaches higher positions on the basis of their experience and the other class of officers are appointed and promoted after clearing the ‘Central Superior Services’ (CSS) exam.
‘Faced challenges’
There are very few educated women officers in the Pakistani police. In such a situation, Ropeta, posted as DSP in the defense sector, has contributed significantly in changing the image of the police force in Sindh province. Ropeta played an important role in solving the case of attempted kidnapping of Pakistani actress Nimra Khan. Ropeta admits that being a female police officer and that too belonging to a minority community was a challenge for her initially, but it also helped her communicate and help victims of various crimes. She said, “When I took up Nimra’s case, I could feel her fear after this painful incident.”
‘Wearing a police uniform is a matter of pride’
DSP Ropeta said her fellow officers and colleagues respect and appreciate her work. “There may be some gender issues, but I don’t feel isolated and it doesn’t matter that I am a Hindu woman. Even today when I wear the police uniform, I feel proud and I hope girls from our community will be inspired by my story and follow the path I have chosen,” Ropeta said. “When I was 13, we lost our father who was a businessman in Jacobabad. Since then, my only brother always encouraged and supported me to join the police force,” she said. Ropeta said her joining the police force was a big step as girls from educated Hindu families in Sindh usually pursue medical or teaching professions.
What did actress Nimra Khan say?
Actress Nimra Khan said, “Initially, fingers were pointed at me and many people in the media and social media platforms called my kidnapping attempt a minor incident, but DSP Manisha Ropeta handled my case, which helped me keep calm and deal with the situation better.” Nimra said that after talking to an educated woman police officer, she realized that she took the right step by talking about this incident publicly.
