New York: A top United Nations official said that Hindi spoken by more than 60 million people is a very important language for this global organization. India’s permanent mission in the United Nations celebrated World Hindi Day based on ‘Multi -Language and Promotion of Hindi abroad’ in its campus on Thursday. Minister of State for Women and Child Development Savitri Thakur said that the society of India is made up of multilingual and multicultural fabric.
She attended the program as a special guest. According to a press release issued by ‘Mission’, Thakur said that several initiatives are being taken to make Hindi more popular and it will be a global language by the United Nations accepting its importance. Melissa Fleming, the under general secretary of ‘Global Communications’ at the United Nations, said that Hindi is spoken by more than 60 million people and is a very important language for the United Nations.
India has given $ 70 million to promote Hindi
India’s permanent representative P. Harish said that Hindi has now been added to the United Nations’ list of informal languages. India has contributed about 7 million dollars to promote Hindi in the United Nations official news service ‘UN News’. Many major academics also participated in the program and shared their experiences related to the promotion of Hindi in America. The Government of India started celebrating World Hindi Day on 10 January 2006 so that Hindi can be made more popular globally. (Language)
