Missile fired during US-Philippines military exercise
Beijing: China has said that the Philippines’ plan to deploy medium-range missiles would be a provocative move that would increase tensions in the region. The Philippines’ top military official told reporters in Manila that the military is planning to deploy medium-range missiles in the South China Sea to defend the country amid tensions with China. “Yes, there are plans, talks are ongoing,” Lieutenant General Roy Galido said.
China is worried about this missile
The US deployed its Typhoon medium-range missile to the northern Philippines in April and troops from both countries are jointly training for the possible use of the heavy weapons. China opposes US military aid to the Philippines and is particularly concerned by the deployment of the ‘Typhoon’ missile. Under President Joe Biden, the US has strengthened military alliances in the Indo-Pacific to counter China, including in the Taiwan dispute.

‘Arms race will increase’
Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Mao Ning said the weapons deployment by the Philippines would intensify geopolitical confrontation and an arms race. “This is an extremely irresponsible decision for their interests and for the history and people of all of Southeast Asia, as well as the security of the region,” he told reporters. The Philippines’ defense plan includes the protection of its exclusive economic zone, which extends for 200 nautical miles (370 km). (AP)
