Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit Russia from October 22-23 at the invitation of President Vladimir Putin to attend the 16th BRICS Summit in Kazan. The Ministry of External Affairs confirmed regarding this visit on Friday.
During his visit, the Prime Minister is also expected to hold bilateral meetings with his counterparts from BRICS member countries and leaders invited to Kazan, the Ministry of External Affairs said in a statement.
The theme of this year’s summit is “Strengthening multilateralism for equitable global development and security”. It said it would provide an important platform for leaders to discuss major global issues.
“The summit will provide a valuable opportunity to assess the progress of the initiatives launched by BRICS and identify potential areas for future cooperation,” the ministry said.
It is noteworthy that Russia is presiding over BRICS this year. BRICS includes Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa. Saudi Arabia, Iran, Ethiopia, Egypt, Argentina and United Arab Emirates are its new members.
You will remember that on July 8 also, PM Modi went to Russia on his two-day visit, where Russian President Vladimir Putin honored Prime Minister Narendra Modi with Russia’s highest civilian honor, the Order of St. Andrew the Apostle. On this, PM Modi had said that this is an honor for 140 crore Indians and a reflection of the age-old friendship between India and Russia.
