Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday attended the 60th Independence Day celebrations of Maldives at Republic Square in Male, where he was honored as a ‘special guest’. Maldives President Mohammad Mujju was also present at the event.
Earlier, Prime Minister Modi met leaders of various political parties in Male. He also met Vice President of Maldives Hussain Mohammad Latif, Parliament President Abdul Rahim Abdullah and former President Mohammad Nasheed.
Sharing details of the yatra, the official spokesperson of the Ministry of External Affairs, Randhir Jaiswal, said, “Prime Minister Narendra Modi today interacted with leaders of various political parties in Male. He greeted his heartfelt greetings on the occasion of Maldives’ Independence Day.”
The two sides reiterated their commitment to further strengthen India-Maldives relations, which would be based on lively public relations and shared values between the two democracy. The leaders of Maldives thanked the Prime Minister for the continuous support of India on developmental assistance for the welfare of the people of Maldives.
The Maldives President’s Office said in a post on X, “Vice President His Majesty Uzin Mohammad Latif made a courtesy call to the Prime Minister of India, His Excellency Shri Narendra Modi.
Prime Minister Modi also posted a post on X after meeting political leaders of Maldives. He said, “There was a meaningful meeting with members of various political parties of Maldives. Participation of leaders of various political parties outlines the support of both parties for the strong and time-defined friendship of India-Maldives. Our shared values will continue to guide this important partnership.”
During his meetings, Prime Minister Modi welcomed the formation of the India-Maldives Parliamentary Friendship Group in the 20th Majlis.
He reiterated that Maldives will always remain an important pillar of India’s ‘neighbor I’ policy and its ocean approach.
