Sheikh Hasina, Former PM of Bangladesh

Dhaka: There is a relief news for former Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. Amid the growing demand to ban the Sheikh Hasina-led Awami League, both its arch rival political parties – BNP and Jamaat – said that they are against banning any political organization. Hasina, who fled to India after resigning on August 5 after long protests over reservation in government jobs, and her party Awami League have been criticized by the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) and Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami (Jamaat).

Don’t believe in politics of ban: BNP

BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said, “Unlike Sheikh Hasina and the Awami League, we do not believe in the politics of banning a political party to settle scores.” The BNP, led by former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia, had boycotted the January general election.

We will not take away democratic rights- Jamaat

The Jamaat, which was banned by the Awami League government, said that it too does not believe in the politics of snatching the democratic rights of any political party. The interim government lifted the ban on the Jamaat last week.

the biggest victims of political atrocities

“We have been the biggest victims of political atrocities committed by the Awami League regime. It had banned us. But we believe that by banning someone you cannot finish a political party or its ideology. We are a classic example of this,” Jamaat-e-Islami chief Shafiqur Rahman told PTI. “We want them to contest the elections and we will defeat them in the polls,” Rahman said. (PTI)
