Moscow: A Russian military court has convicted 23 Ukrainians caught in cases of Ukraine War in terrorism cases. According to Russian media reports and human rights activists, the accused include the current or former fighters of the elite Azov Brigade, which Russia has declared a terrorist group. He told that these people also include those who used to work as cooks or assistant employees there.
What did the Russian Human Rights Group say?
A major Russian human rights group ‘Memorial’ has declared all these political prisoners. It said that some of them were caught during a fight in the Ukrainian port city Mariopol in 2022, where they stayed at the Ajovstal Steel Mill under siege by Russian soldiers. The group said other people were detained as they were trying to leave the city after the Russian army captured the city.
Ukraine reacted strongly
Only 12 Ukrainians were present in the Russian city court on Wednesday, while 11 others, including 9 women, returned to Ukraine under the exchange of 9 women and were convicted in his absence. Ukraine’s human rights messenger Dimitro Lubbies condemned the trial that began in June 2023, calling it ‘another pretense case’ organized for Russia’s ‘his entertainment’.
