Stormy winds are expected to be the cause of the storm. People living near the Santa Cruz Pier were warned to avoid low-lying beach areas as the storm intensified. What did the mayor say?
Santa Cruz Mayor Fred Keeley said lifeguards rescued two people after part of the pier collapsed, although no serious injuries were reported, the Associated Press reported. The pier is undergoing a four million dollar restoration after being damaged by a storm last winter. The collapsed section, which was closed for repairs, included toilets and the ‘Dolphin’ restaurant.
Santa Cruz Ghat was built in 1914
The Santa Cruz Pier was built in 1914 and has been featured in several films including ‘The Lost Boys’. During the accident, about 150 feet of the ghat fell into the water. Officials said the area would remain closed indefinitely due to the hazards posed by debris.
