On Friday, a 7.7 magnitude earthquake occurred in Myanmar, causing heavy havoc. The earthquake was followed by several afterchoxes (shocks), causing roads to burst, buildings collapsed, and its impact was felt to China, Thailand, Vietnam and India.
Main points associated with earthquake:
🔹 The center of earthquake was at a depth of 10 km, near Mandalay in Myanmar. It came at 12:50 pm (local time). This was followed by a 6.4 magnitude afterchock, and then many small shocks were felt.
🔹 Damage in Thailand:
Earthquake tremors were shaken by buildings in Bangkok, and people panicked and came to the streets.
A skyscraper fell in Bangkok’s Chaturchak market, killing 6 people. The first 10 deaths were reported, but later a revised on Figure 6.
Public transport services were stopped for some time.
🔹 Effect in China and Vietnam:
Shocks were also felt in Yunnan province of China.
Beijing’s earthquake agency described it as an earthquake of 7.9 magnitude.
Mild earthquake tremors were also felt in Vietnam.
🔹 Status in India:
West Bengal (Kolkata) and Manipur (Imphal) have mild tremors.
However, no loss or casualties were reported in India.
🔹 increasing deaths in Myanmar:
On Saturday, Myanmar’s ruling Junta government confirmed that the death toll had increased to 1,000.
Hundreds of people are injured and relief work is going on.
The number is expected to increase further.
