After the victory of the People’s Action Party (PAP) led by Prime Minister Lawrence Wong in Singapore general elections, Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated and confirmed strong bilateral relations between the two countries.
Prime Minister Modi praised the partnership between India and Singapore, highlighted the relations between the people of the two countries and expressed his commitment to further strengthen the widespread strategic partnership led by Wong.
Sharing a post on X, PM Modi wrote, “Heartfelt congratulations to Lawrence Wong on a stunning victory in general elections. India and Singapore share a strong and multi -faceted partnership, which is based on close ties between people. I am ready to continue working with you to carry forward our comprehensive strategic partnership.”
The party, which has been in power since 1959, has made a significant improvement in its 2020 performance, has won 87 out of 97 parliamentary seats and has increased its share to 65.6 percent in the popular vote, which was 61.2 percent in the last election. After the victory of PAP, PM Wong thanked the voters for his strong support.
Sharing a post on X, Wong wrote, “The people of Singapore have given a clear and strong mandate to rule @Papsingapore. I am grateful for the confidence that you have shown in me and my team.” In another post he wrote, “So let us stand as a team Singapore – face the storms coming together and ensure a bright future for all. We will involve the people of Singapore in this journey to shape our future. We will join and hear – because every voice is important.”
Wong also appreciated the efforts of the opposition, especially the Workers Party and pledged to take his contribution in Parliament seriously.
Wong wrote on X, “Opposition, especially the Workers’ Party fielded a strong candidate and gave us a tough fight. I respect the presence of the opposition in Parliament and will take seriously their ideas and suggestions. Finally, the big contest is not between political parties, but between Singapore and the challenges faced by us.”
Wong was first elected Member of Parliament in 2011. Before becoming Prime Minister, he took over as a minister in the Ministry of Culture, Community and Youth, Ministry of National Development and Ministry of Education and was also the Chairman of the Monetary Authority of Singapore. He also co-existed the multi-ministerial taskforce, which oversees the Government of Singapore to the Kovid-19 epidemic.
