Seoul: South Korean investigators have requested the court to issue a warrant to formally arrest President Yoon Suk Yeol, who is facing impeachment. Yoon was facing impeachment and the sword of arrest was hanging over him after which the police arrested him on Wednesday (January 15). More than 3 thousand police officers reached Yun’s house to arrest him. Yun had announced the imposition of martial law in the country on December 3 last year, but due to protests he had to withdraw it after a few hours. After this incident, political turmoil had intensified in South Korea.

Yoon has been in the custody of investigating agencies for the last three days as his lawyers have failed to get him released. If Yoon is formally arrested, investigators could extend his detention for up to 20 days. During this time the case will be handed over to government prosecutors for prosecution. This could be the beginning of a longer detention period for Yoon that could last months or possibly even longer.
