Sudan Civil War: 57 people killed in violent clashes in Darfur, Khartum again capture army

by Rajeev Bansal
April 18, 2025

At least 57 people have died in fierce clashes and shelling between the paramilitary force rapid support forces (RSF) and regular army in Al-Faher city of Darfur area of Sudan. According to the AFP News Agency, this information was given by a medical source and a voluntary support group on Thursday.

The Volunal Help Group Resistance Committee said that on Wednesday, many civilians were killed in heavy shelling and attacks conducted by RSF in the city. The attack occurred at a time when there has been a further confrontation in the Darfur region in the recent weeks in the ongoing war between paramilitary forces and the army.

The civil war started in Sudan in April 2023 when both the Army and RSF opened a front against each other in an attempt to grab power. At the same time, the army had to move away from the capital Khartum to the city Port Sudan, situated on the banks of the Red Sea.

Since the onset of this conflict, more than 12 million Sudani citizens have had to migrate from Khartum and other areas. Apart from this, about 28,000 people have lost their lives in the war so far. The United Nations and International Institutions have called Sudani civil war as the “most horrific human disaster” in the world. Many parts of the country are in the grip of starvation and famine. The huge shortage of food, water and medicines has completely disturbed life.

Sternace growing stress has divided Sudan into about two parts. The army now controls the center, north and eastern parts of the country, while RSF has captured most parts of the Darfur region as well as parts of the southern Sudan with the help of its colleagues.

Recently in March 2025, the Sudani Army claimed that they took control of the RSF and again captured the capital Khartum. Army Chief General Abdul Fatah al-Burhan released a video on Thursday announced that “Khartum is independent”.

In this video, Burhan was seen landing at Khatum International Airport. This is believed to be the first comeback of the army in the capital. In the video, he was seen kissing the ground and raising his fist in the air as a symbol of victory in front of the soldiers.

After the announcement of the re -possession of Khartum, the army controlled government spokesperson and Information Minister Khalid Aliser also confirmed this on social media. He wrote, “This is an important and decisive moment in the history of Sudan. Khatum is independent, as it should be.”

After this, the army has also started shelling on parts of Omdurman, a city adjacent to the capital Khartum. Omdurman is considered to be the twin city of Khartum and efforts are on to drive the RSF from here too.

However, RSF is still present in Omdurman, Darfur region of Western Sudan and other parts of the country and these areas remain captured.

Even after the completion of two years of the war, no concrete initiative of peace is visible.

The return of the army in Khartum is being seen as a symbolic victory. But as long as the effect of RSF is maintained in different parts of the country, complete control and stability will remain a challenge.
