Johannesburg: In a school in South Africa, the teacher allegedly cut the religious thread (Kalava) from the wrist of a Hindu student. After this incident, anger and resentment have spread in Hindu society. People of the Hindu community have condemned it, describing it as insensitive and irresponsible. The incident took place last week at Drekensburg Secondary School in Quajulu-Natal province.

African Hindu Mahasabha demands action

The South African Hindu Mahasabha (SAHMS) has demanded action from the education authorities after this act of the teacher. The organization said in a press statement, “SAHMS strongly condemns a teacher’s insensitive and irresponsible action by a teacher to cut the art of Hindu student.”

What did the teacher say?

In the Constitution, discrimination is prohibited on various grounds including religion in the South Africa Charter of religious rights and freedom. The government has established the Statutory Human Rights Commission to take action on any complaint related to discriminatory practices. Meanwhile, the teacher claimed that the school did not allow cultural or religious symbols to wear.
