Dr. S. Jaishankar, Foreign Minister.
Russia: Addressing the 16th BRICS summit in Kazan, External Affairs Minister Dr S Jaishankar raised the issue of respect for territorial integrity and sovereignty. Along with security, the Foreign Minister also focused on reforms in international institutions like the United Nations Security Council (UNSC). India has been raising the demand for reforms in UNSC for a long time at various international forums. This time Foreign Minister Jaishankar has again drawn the world’s attention towards this important issue in BRICS. He said, “…how can we create a more equitable global order?
Jaishankar said that for this, first of all the platform of independent nature will have to be strengthened and expanded. By broadening the options and reducing unnecessary dependencies across different domains that can be availed. In this, BRICS can make a difference for the Global South…. 2) By reforming established institutions and mechanisms, especially the permanent and non-permanent categories of the UN Security Council. Similarly, by reforming the Multilateral Development Bank, whose working processes are as old as the United Nations.
Example of reforms given during India’s G-20 presidency
India gave the example of its presidency of G-20 for reforms. Jaishankar said India started an effort during its G20 presidency and we are happy to see Brazil take it forward… 3) by democratizing the global economy by creating more manufacturing hubs… 4) global infrastructure By correcting the distortions that have been inherited from the colonial era. The world needs more connectivity options that enhance logistics and reduce risks. This should be a collective effort, with full respect for territorial integrity and sovereignty…5) By sharing experiences and new initiatives.” In this way a new format of global justice system can be created.
Emphasis on resolving conflicts and tensions
External Affairs Minister Dr S Jaishankar said, “Effectively addressing conflicts and tensions is the special need of the day. Prime Minister Modi has emphasized that this is not an era of war. Jaishankar said, “… We are faced with the paradox that even as the forces of change move forward, some old issues have become even more complex. On the one hand, production and consumption are increasingly diversifying. Nations that have gained independence from colonialism have accelerated their development and socio-economic progress. New capabilities have emerged, making it easier to utilize more talent. This economic, political and cultural rebalancing has now reached the point where we can contemplate multi-polarity.”
