TAIPEI: Prosecutors in Taiwan on Thursday charged former presidential candidate and Taiwan People’s Party founder Ko Wen-je with corruption. Ko Wen-je has been accused of taking bribes during his tenure as mayor of the Taiwanese capital. Former Taipei Mayor Wen-je is accused of taking bribes during his tenure, according to a statement from prosecutors. He is also accused of misappropriating the amount of political donations.
If found guilty on all charges, he could potentially face up to 28.5 years in prison. Development work related to the ‘Core Pacific City’ group in Taipei led to these allegations. Prosecutors say Wen-Jae gave the company exemptions from city construction regulations in exchange for bribes. Wen-je has denied these allegations of bribery and corruption.
Corruption accused have joined the presidential race
Wen-Jae has also been a physician in the past. He emerged on the political scene in 2014 by winning the race for mayor of Taipei. He served two terms from 2014 to 2022. He founded TPP in 2019. Wen-je ran for president this year. He finished third but attracted a large number of young voters. The politics of Taiwan is mainly dominated by two main political parties – ‘Nationalist Party (Kuomingtang)’ and ‘Democratic Progressive Party’. (AP)
