Fire breaks out in one of the world’s largest battery storage plants in America
MOSS LANDING: Hundreds of people have been ordered to evacuate after a massive fire broke out at one of the world’s largest battery storage facilities Thursday afternoon. A portion of Highway 1 in Northern California has been closed due to the fire. According to the news of Mercury News, flames and black smoke are visible rising and there are no signs of it slowing down.
People were instructed to vacate the area
About 1,500 people have been directed to evacuate the Moss Landing and Elkhorn Slough area due to the fire. The Moss Landing power plant, located about 124 kilometers south of San Francisco, is owned by Texas company Vistra Energy and houses thousands of lithium batteries.
‘This is a disaster’
Lithium batteries are important for storing electricity from renewable energy sources such as solar power, but if they catch fire they can be very difficult to put out. Monterey County Supervisor Glenn Church told KSBW-TV it was a disaster. (AP)
