‘There is a SIM card but not a network …’, PM Modi gave a message to the world from BRICS conference

by Rajeev Bansal
July 6, 2025

Prime Minister Narendra Modi gave a big message to the world from the BRICS conference on Sunday and said that global South has often been a victim of “double criteria” and the nations who have made a major contribution in the world economy do not find a place on the decide table. He demanded immediate improvement in major bodies including the United Nations Security Council.

In his address at the BRICS Summit, Modi said that two-thirds of humanity have not received adequate representation in global institutions formed in the 20th century. He said that without global South, these institutions will appear to be like a mobile phone that has a SIM card but does not have a network.

The annual BRICS summit began with a group photo of leaders of the member countries of the group, followed by Brazilian President Louis Eneasio Lula Da Silva.

Modi said, “Global South has often been a victim of double norms. Whether it is a matter of development, a matter of distribution of resources or security related issues.”

In his address at the first full session, the Prime Minister regretted that Global South has often received nothing other than nominal gestures on issues like climate finance, sustainable development and technology access.

He said, “The countries that contribute to the major contribution in today’s global economy have not been given a place on the deciding table. It is not just a question of representation, but also a question of credibility and effectiveness.”

Modi said that today the world needs a new multi -polar and inclusive system and it should start with extensive reforms in global institutions.

He said, “Improvement should not only be symbolic, but also their real effects should be visible. The governance structure, franchise and leadership positions should be changed.”

The Prime Minister argued that the challenges of global South countries should be given priority in policy-making.

He said that the expansion of BRICS is proof that it is an organization that has the ability to change itself according to time.

He said, “Now we have to show the same will for improving institutions like United Nations Security Council, World Trade Organization and multilateral development banks.” He said, “In the era of artificial intelligence, where the technology is updated every week, it is not acceptable that no global institution is updated even once in 80 years.”

Modi said, “The 21st century software cannot be run with the 20th -century typewriter. India has always considered its duty to rise above its interests and work in the interest of humanity. We are fully committed to making creative contribution to all subjects in association with BRICS countries.”
