Nepalese mountaineer Mingma Ji Sherpa
KATHMANDU: Renowned Nepali mountaineer Mingma Ji Sherpa, who created history by becoming the first Nepali mountaineer to climb all 14 peaks above 8,000 meters without using supplemental oxygen, was honored on Friday. Mingma, 38, reached the summit of Shisha Pangma (8,027 meters high) in Tibet at around 4.06 pm in October and became the first mountaineer from Nepal to climb 14 8,000-metre peaks without the use of supplemental oxygen.
Climbed Everest in 2007
Minister of State for Tourism, Culture and Civil Aviation Arun Kumar Choudhary honored Mingma at an event organized by the Nepal Mountaineering Association in Kathmandu on Friday. Born in Rolwaling Rural Municipality of Dolakha district, Mingma first climbed the world’s highest peak Everest (8,848.86 metres) in 2007 and completed his mission by climbing Mount Shisha Pangma (8,027 metres) on October 4, 2024. Mingma, a ‘mountain guide’ by profession, has climbed Mount Everest six times. He is also the owner of ‘Imagine Nepal’, a mountaineering agency in Nepal.
Made this demand from the government
“Being a citizen of the hill country Nepal, I dared to climb 14 high peaks without an oxygen cylinder to raise the prestige of my country in the international arena,” Mingma told PTI. He asked the government to declare emergency. Requested to create a permanent rescue team equipped with facilities to rescue mountaineers who face mountain tourism so as to promote mountain tourism in the country. He said that in the absence of well-equipped rescue teams, the lives of many Sherpas are in danger. (Language)
