Jerusalem: Israel’s security cabinet held an important meeting on Friday. The meeting is to decide whether to approve a deal that could free dozens of people held hostage by militants in Gaza and end 15 months of war. If approved by the Cabinet, the agreement will be sent to the government for final approval before the ceasefire comes into force.

What did Netanyahu’s office say?

Before Friday’s meeting, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office had previously said that there were some last-minute obstacles in finalizing the agreement. Israel delayed a security cabinet vote on Thursday, citing the dispute with Hamas as the reason for the delay in approval. However, an early morning statement appeared to clear the way for a vote on the deal by the security cabinet.

PM Netanyahu said he has instructed to prepare a special task force to take hostages returning from Gaza. The Prime Minister’s Office said a ceasefire could begin on Sunday with the initial hostage release if the agreement is reached. Under the deal, 33 of the approximately 100 hostages remaining in Gaza are to be released over the next six weeks, in exchange for hundreds of Palestinians imprisoned by Israel. Additionally, Israeli forces will withdraw from many areas, hundreds of thousands of Palestinians will be able to return to their homes, and humanitarian aid will increase. The remaining hostages, including male soldiers, are to be released in the second phase.

What did Hamas say?

Hamas has said it will not release the remaining captives without a permanent ceasefire and Israel’s complete withdrawal, while Israel has vowed to continue fighting until the group is eliminated and maintains open security control over the area. There are many questions regarding the post-war situation and Gaza that are yet to be answered. Including who will rule the territory or oversee the difficult task of reconstruction.

The agreement has drawn strong opposition from Netanyahu’s right-wing coalition partners, on whom the Israeli prime minister depends to stay in power. Israel’s hardline National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir has threatened to leave the government if Israel approves a ceasefire. “If this agreement is reached, we will leave the government with a heavy heart,” Ben-Gvir wrote on X on Friday.

Meanwhile, fighting continues in Gaza, with at least 72 people killed in Israeli strikes on Thursday. In previous conflicts, both sides had escalated military operations in the final hours before a ceasefire in a show of force. Hamas initiated the war with a cross-border attack into Israel on October 7, 2023, killing about 1,200 people and taking 250 others hostage. Israel responded with a devastating attack, killing more than 46,000 Palestinians, according to local health officials. More than half of those killed are women and children. (AP)
