Cory Buker Speech: US MP Corey Booker set a new record by giving the longest speech in the history of the Senate on Tuesday. The Democratic Senator from New Jersey protested against the policies of President Donald Trump and gave a continuous speech for 24 hours and 20 minutes. Corey broke the previous record established by Senator Strom Thermand in 1957. Thramand gave a speech for 24 hours 18 minutes against the Civil Rights Act at that time.
‘Our country is in crisis’
Booker started his talk on the stage of the Senate at 7 pm on Monday evening (local time) and kept speaking continuously till 8:05 pm on Tuesday night. He said that his aim is to “disrupt the general functioning of the United States Senate as long as I am physically capable.” At the beginning of his speech, he insisted, “I am standing tonight because I am confident that our country is in crisis.”

This speech of Corey Booker was not to stop any particular bill. Instead, it was protest against the policies of the Trump administration. In his speech, Booker accused the Trump administration of protecting Americans, financial stability and damage to the fundamental foundation of democracy. “In the last 71 days, the President of the United States has caused so much damage to the Americans that are not normal time, and should not be taken in the Senate normally,” he said.

Booker raised several issues in his speech, including the possibility of cutting of medicade and social security, attacking the education department, and Trump’s foreign policy. He read the letters of his voters, in which people mentioned the problems of Trump’s policies. In addition, he repeatedly mentioned John Lewis, the symbol of the Civil Rights Movement and spoke of adopting his views.

Several senators, including Senate minority leader Chak Shumar, came to the stage from time to time and gave them small breaks by asking questions. After breaking the record, Shumar said, “Do you know that you have broken the record just? Do you know how much pride this group takes on you? Booker completed this challenge by standing for 25 hours and 4 minutes and without taking a bathroom break. He achieved this feat with the help of only two glasses of water and his notes. His colleague Senator Chris Murphy said that Booker had also removed his chair so that he could not sit. This speech of Booker was seen well on social media.
