Grenfell Tower Fire

London: A report on Wednesday into the devastating Grenfell Tower fire in the British capital said decades of failures by government, regulators and industry turned the high-rise building into a “death trap” that killed 72 people. A years-long public inquiry into the 2017 blaze concluded there was no “single cause” for the tragedy, but that a combination of unscrupulous companies, weak or incompetent regulators and a negligent government led to the building being the worst fire on British soil since World War II.

What did Prime Minister Keir Starmer say?

Retired judge Martin Moore-Bick, who headed the inquiry, said the deaths of those caught in the fire could have been avoided but there was repeated negligence. He said, “Everyone was negligent in some way, in most cases through incompetence but in some cases through dishonesty and greed.” British Prime Minister Keir Starmer apologized on behalf of the government after the inquiry findings came out and said that such a tragedy “should never happen”. He promised justice to the victims’ families.

‘We paid the price’

While the report may give survivors some of the answers they have long awaited, they will have to wait to see if anyone will be found guilty and prosecuted. Police will examine the findings of the investigation before deciding on charges. Natasha Alcock, from Grenfell United, a group representing survivors and victims’ families, called on authorities to “deliver justice and bring those responsible for the deaths of our loved ones.” “We have paid the price for systematic dishonesty, institutional indifference and neglect,” she said.
