South Korea Parliament.
Seoul: South Korea’s main opposition party on Thursday submitted a motion to impeach the country’s acting president. This impeachment motion has been brought due to his reluctance to fill the three vacant posts of the Constitutional Court. The motion against the acting president comes before the court reviews rebellion charges against President Yoon Suk Yeol, who is facing impeachment. An impeachment motion was brought against Yoon due to the short-lived ‘martial law’ order on December 3.
Appointments to the court have been stalled due to a growing dispute between liberal-minded opposition parties and Yun’s conservative party. The possible impeachment of Prime Minister Han Duk-soo, who currently serves as acting president, could deepen the political impasse. The National Assembly, controlled by opposition parties, also passed a resolution to appoint three judges to the Constitutional Court. The court is preparing to begin deliberations on whether to dismiss or reinstate Yun.
Yoon is yet to be removed from office
National Assembly Speaker Woo Won Shik had urged Han to quickly appoint judges. Most members of Yun’s People’s Power Party (PPP) had boycotted the National Assembly vote. Members argued that Han should not exercise presidential authority to appoint the proposed judges, while Yoon has yet to be formally removed from office. (AP)
