The administration of US President Donald Trump will honor the women’s student leaders leading the protest against the Sheikh Hasina government in Bangladesh last year for their “extraordinary courage, strength and leadership”.
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and first female Melania Trump will host the annual ‘International Women of Council’ (IWOC) award ceremony in the Ministry of External Affairs on Tuesday.
Bangladesh student leaders will be honored with the ‘Medelene Alberite Honorary Group Award’. The award is named after America’s first women’s foreign minister.
The Ministry of External Affairs said in a statement, “In July-August 2024, there was a brave group of girl students in the agitation against violent repression in Bangladesh. Despite danger and violence, she stood firmly between security forces and male protesters and performed extraordinary courage. ”
However, the Ministry of External Affairs did not say who would be given the award.
