The Trump administration withdrew the status of terrorist organization from a group led by the new Syrian President Ahmed Al Shara.
The step is part of Syrian’s attempt to improve the US relations with the new interim government.
In a statement released on Monday, External Affairs Minister Marco Rubio said that this change will be effective from Tuesday and recognizes the positive steps taken by the new Syrian government.
The Federal Register published a notice on Monday, stating that Rubio took the decision on 23 June after consulting the Attorney General and Finance Department.
This decision was not announced earlier. However, this decision has been taken at a time when the Trump administration is moving towards reducing or abolishing several US sanctions imposed during the rule of former President Bashar al -Assad.
A brief notice issued by the US government stated that the Al-Nusra front is being removed from the list of Foreign Terrorist Organization (FTO).
This is the same group which is now known as Hayat Tahrir al-Sham. The group was previously connected to al-Qaeda and separated from it in 2017. The Trump administration had declared it as a terrorist organization earlier.
